2019-01-23 The Gleneagles Hotel, under new ownership, ran Fawlty Towers weekends once a month where guests were looked after by actors who play the part of Basil, Sybil and Manuel. Opened in 1963, it closed permanently in February 2015, and is to be demolished with retirement apartments built on the site. 2011-08-29 In fact, we were holidaying in the Australian Torquay – the surf capital of the country – that week so we kind of liked the coincidence. Plus, we were lifetime fans of Fawlty Towers and knew that’s where the classic show was set. We wanted to find the real Fawlty Towers. So we booked a (normal-looking) bed and breakfast and made for Torquay.
