The book's wild, globe-trotting plot is hilarious in a Monty Python sort of way: violence and heartbreak are treated with a deadpan tone, making it impossible not to laugh at uncomfortable scenarios. The book concludes with a moral all young people could stand to hear, but not before wryly critiquing just about every government and organized religion that's ever existed."

James Patterson is such a gifted writer, and since he turned his attention to novels specifically crafted for the middle-school set, he’s put out numerous books that could appear on this list. This one, though, is the book I can’t keep on my library shelves. We first meet him in Sam Wu Is Not Afraid Of Ghosts!, where Sam decides to prove to the school bully that he’s not as much of a scaredy-cat as everyone thinks. Aimed at the younger end of the middle school cohort, the Sam Wu stories are a lovely, relatable read for anyone who’s had to deal with childhood fears. The Face on the Milk Carton, Wanted, Fatality – These mystery/suspense titles are some of the most popular books in our class library! For middle school readers, I can’t recommend them highly enough! Cooney weaves teen angst, kidnappings, theft, romance, family issues, (you name it!) all into irresistible page-turning stunners.

My Favorite Books to Read With Middle Schoolers in 7th and 8th Grade I am by no means the absolute expert on the best books for certain age groups, but now that I have spent a solid amount of time in each 5th, 6th, 7th, and 8th grade as a reading and writing teacher, I definitely have my favorites for each group.
Ross Maloy wants to fly under the radar and survive middle school, but that's pretty hard to do when you've been diagnosed with eye cancer. Instead of blending in, Ross sticks out in all the wrong ways. This humorous and heartfelt story will have kids laughing, crying, and cheering for the unlucky hero. (On sale: 3/31/2020)
